Tiwani Contemporary was founded in 2011 by Maria Varnava in London and exhibits international contemporary artists with a focus on African art. Since 2022, the gallery has also had a second space in Lagos, Nigeria. The name Tiwani Contemporary is derived from a Yoruba word meaning ‘it is ours’. And in a way, this statement about ownership sums up the purpose of this young London gallery, as Maria Varnava, the founder, explains: “I am of Greek Cypriot descent but spent my formative years in Nigeria… Tiwani Contemporary is in many ways a Nigerian-led initiative in my heart.” A great place for anyone who is interested in contemporary art and has a soft spot for Africa.
