The Avoca success story began south of Wicklow in the old Avoca Village weaving mill. The village is situated on a small, fast-flowing river, which runs through the middle of the Avoca property. The mill was being intensively used by weavers as far back as the eighteenth century, but rose to fame in the early twentieth century thanks to the Wynnes sisters, who produced blankets and scarves in uniquely intense, happy colours. In the seventies the Avoca firm took over the weaving mill and continued production ever more enthusiastically. Avoca’s mill is located some seventy kilometres south of Dublin. The brief excursion is well worth the drive, above all when combined with an overnight stay in Hunter’s Hotel. In Avoca Village there is of course a typical Avoca café as well as an Avoca shop to browse through.
