The obligatory line out the door of any culinary locale in San Francisco is an unmistakable sign of superior quality. The Tartine Bakery does not offer many seats, yet the output of this small space is tremendous. Luckily, you can also order for take away. There are so many rows of delicious cakes and tarts in the display case that one visit just won’t suffice to try all the temptations on offer. The breakfast with croissants, morning buns and coffee from Four Barrel – San Francisco’s famous roastery – can be enjoyed in the early morning, while from 10am on the croque monsieur is available. Made of sliced sourdough bread, béchamel sauce, bacon and cheese, it’s the best you have ever tasted. Also the bread pudding with seasonal berries is worth a try. The owners, pastry chef Elisabeth Prueitt and baker Chad Robertson know what great quality is. They learned their skills in France, honed their craft in a small Californian bakery and finally settled in 2002 in Mission District. Their legendary bread is baked from Tuesday until Saturday, always in the afternoon – and boy oh boy, can you smell it!
