The Statens Museum is the most important museum for the visual arts in Denmark. The impressive 1896 building is surrounded by a romantic park and as well as temporary exhibitions contains three permanent ‘Royal Collections’: Painting and Sculpture; Plaster Casts; and Graphic Arts. These comprehensive collections are rooted in the art collections of Danish monarchs, and date from 1300 until today. Greats such as Tizian, Rembrandt and Henri Matisse are present alongside modern Danish artists such as Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby. In 1999 a new modern wing was built, in which temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists take place.
