The Grotto Borei is a place of pure female power. Fiorella is at the cooker and her two daughters Sara and Elisa run the restaurant. They are the third generation of women from the Battistessa family who spoil the guests of the Grotto with homemade gitzi, pumpkin ravioli, braised beef or risotto. This is accompanied by wines from the region. The Grotto was founded by Fiorella’s mother Ersilia in the 1970s, who decided to create a place of rest and refreshment for passing hikers. And what a place it is! The Grotto Borei is located far above Brissago and offers a spectacular view of Lake Maggiore as well as the peaks Cardada, Pizzo Vogorgno, Comoghé, Monte Tamaro. On a clear day, you can even see the castles of Bellinzona. It is probably one of the most beautiful views that a grotto in Ticino can offer. You sit on small terraces and seating areas spread out on different levels, surrounded by greenery, the sun on your face and the sparkling lake below you. It’s no wonder that Ersilia’s business has developed and grown over the past 40 years from a small inn to a popular destination: to about 70 seats outside and 40 in the cosy fireside lounge. Add to this the really excellent cuisine and the great women of the Battistessa family – a favourite place!
