The history of olive oil, typical of the Garda region, is beautifully illustrated in the Museo dell’Olio. Since the Middle Ages, people here have been living off olive oil. Since it is a cultivation area far to the north, the farmers of Lake Garda were able to sell their olive oil beyond the Alps, for example in Germany. Already in the 9th century the importance of olive oil for Malcésine, Garda and Assenza is guaranteed.
In the past the olives were crushed with donkeys and millstones and then pressed in an oak press. In Cisano you can see the different techniques since the 17th century. The evolution from the artisan oil mill to the modern pressing techniques is beautifully explained. In the museum you can also taste olive oil as well as other olive products – and on the shelves you will find some popular souvenirs to buy.
