Across the street from the Café Paris, where, in 2007, the idea for the Lion Bar was hatched, there is a dark door with buzzer. Behind the door lies a sort of living room swathed in velvet, dark wallpaper and dim light. In this space, host Joerg Meyer in resurrecting almost forgotten cocktails and giving them new life. Lounging on a comfortable couch, a classic drink in hand, listening to the pleasant music, you can forget about the world beyond that dark door. During the week, the clientele is 80 % regulars, who, rather than check the menu, leave their decision to the bartender’s good judgment, saying just, “I’ll have something with a gin base, please.” On one summer’s eve, that could have been the “Gin Basil Smash” made from gin, basil, citrus, and sugar and served in a whiskey tumbler. Or maybe it would have been a “Mirabell Sour”, which, as simple as it is good, wonderfully harmonizes sweet and sour. World-renowned bartenders are regularly invited to Le Lion to concoct their latest drinks. So that you don’t have to stand outside in front of the locked door, it would be best to reserve in advance.
