The Kaminarimon or also thunder gate mentioned, is the entrance gate to the Sensō-ji temple and beyond that the landmark of the quarter Asakusa. The impressive, almost mighty red gate got its name from Raijin, the god of thunder, in whose honour it was built. The history of this gate goes back to the year 941, when a military commander had the present cult object built. But the gate is not the only attraction, there are four impressive statues – the Shinto gods Wind and Thunder, a Buddhist god and a goddess – guarding the gate, and a huge red lantern hanging under the chimney.
