To reach Schönenbach you have to drive a lot of serpentines. The destination is definitely worth a visit: The Jagdgasthaus Ebender with the best and most beautifully presented Käsknöpfle from Lake Constance. A hunting lodge is run here in the 4th generation. The parents turned it into an inn and Mariette and Hubert Ebender have renovated the whole house to the point, simply and harmoniously: That means the old timbers were torn out and all brushed bright. For newcomers, the house smells like a gentle spruce infusion in the sauna. The house is pure tradition – but in an absolutely wonderful way: The rooms are simple, but so beautifully alpine. All around are alpine huts, which you can also rent in summer if you love simple life: make a fire, spring water and bathe in the stream! The restaurant is accordingly: the menu is simple, traditional and great: the owner says 90% demand is for cheese noodles (Schönbacher Käsknöpfle) and game ragout with knöpfle and red cabbage. A speciality are the Riebel dumplings with berry ragout – a secret recipe of the family (the only thing we know is that semolina flour is inside – but we can safely say: “to die for”!) You can only get them in here.
