At Hog Island Oyster Company owners and childhood friends John Finger and Terry Sawyer guarantee excellent quality, unconditional indulgence and passion. Their parents started breeding the beloved Pacific and Atlantic oysters in 1983 with just 500 dollars. Then they combed the oyster grounds with just one small raft, and today they harvest over 3 million oysters, using an award winning sustainable breeding method. You can taste the oysters at the Ferry Building, which has a direct view on Baybridge. Here you can also order the popular clam chowder, a rich mussel soup with vegetables, potatoes, bacon and cream, which is a Californian coast classic. However, the nicest way to enjoy the oysters is getting them directly from Hog Island Oyster Farm (20215 Highway 1, Marshall), situated right at the scenic Highway 1, 49 miles north of San Francisco – and the journey is indeed its own reward. Visitors who make it to the cream-colored wooden house with its simple chairs, get to enjoy the freshest oyster picnic with a glass of wine and excellent bread. It’s definitely worth the trip!
