Only a few steps away from the Basel Fair, felt but miles away from the glamour of the Artmesse, is the Goldene Fass. A corner house in the middle of the petit bourgeois milieu of Kleinbasel, partly covered with ivy, partly sprayed with graffiti. If you want to eat well in Basel, stop here. There you can meet older regulars, young scene people and clientele from Kleinbasel. Chef Gilbert Engelhard cooks fresh from the market and bakes the bread himself. From Tuesday to Sunday there are homemade sausages, fish and chips or vegi food. But the Goldene Fass also serves elaborate menus, such as the Surprise 3-course for only fifty francs. After the meal you switch to the Fassbar, the hippest bar in Basel.
