It is not only the art that’s spectacular here, but also the building itself, its garden, location and views. Well-known architect Richard Meier constructed the site with bright white stone, glass and metal in 1997 on the Brentwood hills. Once you’ve parked your car in the museum’s parking station, you hop into an electric train and are taken to the top of the hill. Waterfalls and green surrounds you as you climb the gently rising stairs up to the main plateau and from there into the building, which houses pieces by Rubens, van Gogh, Rembrandt and Monet. Antique furniture is also on display, as well as books from the middle ages and temporary exhibitions, for example architectural photographs by Julius Shulman. The best time to come is at sunset. From the numerous balconies there is a wonderful view over the ocean, the San Gabriel mountains and sometimes even to Catalina Island, not to mention over the glimmering lights of Highway 405. Entry is free, parking costs 15 dollars.
