The Fondation Maeght is one of the first art addresses on the Côte d’Azur. The collector couple Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, who lived in Paris at the time, commissioned the Spanish architect Josep Lluis Sert to build a private museum in the 1950s. They wanted to create a place and a space for their collection that was worthy of it. Today, in the dark pine forests of SaintPaul, this architectural masterpiece with its enchanting sculpture garden emerges like a treasure chest containing the works of the most renowned artists of the 20th century.Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky are just a few who have joined the gallery of masterpieces. In doing so, they have created a monument to the lives of the artists who visited the Côte d’Azur and were inspired by the power of colour. The Fondation Maeght is considered one of the most famous open-air museums of modern art; without its artistic legacy, this place would not have become a legend.
