In the garden of the cosy Tante Emma shop in the tranquil Paternoster hides the pearl Die Winkel Oep Ve Koep. Kobus van der Merwe served the best local cuisine in his wonder garden. After years abroad, the passionate cook decided to return home and run his own restaurant in a small garden bordering his mother’s corner shop. Here one sits relaxed at colourful tables and chairs and is happy about the special place. The menu of the day includes regional specialities such as West Cape oysters, fish with ice cabbage and grapefruit and a vegetarian version of the South African meatloaf (bobotie) made from corn, with fresh ingredients from his own vegetable garden and freshly caught fish from the village. Today, Kobus van der Merwe has moved on and opened his own restaurant Wolfgat for one kilometre, becoming Chef of the Year in 2019. And this is this small village in the middle of nowhere. The offer is not so special anymore, but still a nice place for a snack in between.
