Angelenos have been heard to say, “She is so Chateau Marmont!” when describing a woman who is ultra bohemian-chic, relaxed but elegant, eccentric but nonetheless timeless. Such is the Chateau Marmont, the Hollywood castle on Sunset Boulevard built in 1929 in the style of a Loire Valley chateau. The bungalows, tucked away in a verdant garden, and labyrinthine suites (some with there own kitchens) have played host to the stars ever since its grand opening. Head to the Norman-style terrace to see and be seen just as Greta Garbo and James Dean once did and Lana del Ray, Jennifer Aniston and Leonardo di Caprio do today. As a no-name, you’ll need to reserve well in advance and you are likely to be seated in the foyer rather than on the terrace. But the Italian-inspired dishes like lobster risotto and the legendary Chateau Burger taste just as good there. Either way, everyone should visit at least once to enjoy the luxurious, cool atmosphere. Sophia Ford Coppola has already made the cult-status hotel into a cinematic landmark with her film “Somewhere” and HBO is planning a mini-series about its history.
