The “Casa di Giulietta” is, next to the amphitheatre, Verona’s most famous trademark. The medieval city palace is located in the centre of the All City, just a few steps from the market square “Piazza delle Erbe” and is the scene of what is probably the most famous tragedy in the world: Romeo & Juliet. Shakespeare describes houses and squares that are still easily recognizable today, making the “Casa di Giulietta” – the house of Julietta – in Via Capello No. 23 a romantic place of pilgrimage. And indeed, the palace once belonged to the rich Capello family who fought bloody battles for supremacy in Verona in the 13th century. The family coat of arms shows a hat – in Italian “cappello” – over a key and can still be seen above the arch of the entrance gate.
