Founded in 1705, Tomaselli is the oldest cafe in Austria in 1705 and pastries are still served on silver trays by girls in white aprons. If you want the original Tomaselli experience, go early in the morning when the regulars are quietly rustling newspapers at marble tables, the “cake girls” are filling the display cases, and a sweet fragrance wafts from the bakery and through the rooms. Tomaselli is especially nice under the green and white striped umbrellas outside and when a slight breeze blows under the chestnut trees in the kiosk on hot days, a veritable oasis in the heart of the bustling Old Market.
