Berenjak Soho, named after the colourful, roasted rice balls eaten as a snack at Iranian fairs, reflects the spirit of Tehran’s tiny kebab joints – but with more style and class. Exposed brick, shabby plaster, stained glass windows and mosaic floors set the tone, while the open kitchen is dominated by a mangal grill and a tandoor oven. You can eat at the counter at Berenjak Soho, grab a brown leather booth or take a seat at one of the tables under the skylight at the back. The menu is divided into meze, kebabs and khoresht stews. We recommend the aubergine with tomatoes and cackle bean eggs as a starter, which is served with a rectangular sangak, a wholemeal flatbread baked on pebbles. Afterwards, you should definitely order a “wonderfully tender” kebab of lamb shoulder mince with buttery saffron rice. The prices are fair for London and the charming service ensures that tables are fully booked very quickly.
