Balkhausen is definitely the most traditional bakery in Cologne. Locals and tourists alike queue up here for bread with a history and with every tray that is carried from the bakery into the small sales room, the queue on Apostelnstraße gets longer and the smell better. But it’s no wonder, whether it’s Russian plucked cake, walnut slices or wholemeal carrot bread, everything here smells heavenly and tastes just as delicious! Add to this the charm of an old traditional bakery – the bakery is run by master confectioner Balkhausen himself and the interior dates back to the 1950s. They still exist, the good things from the old days.
