Art Basel was also called the “Olympics of the art world” by the British Daily Mail. It is the world’s most important art fair, in which 300 galleries participate. It turns Basel upside down every year in early summer. For four days, more than 65,000 visitors, collectors, art enthusiasts and artists populate the city. Many parties, receptions and other events take place in its run-up. The exhibition halls are crowded during the day. Stalls from all over the world show and trade anything from Picasso to Gerhard Richter and brand-new hot shots as well as anything that promises to be successful. The restaurant Kunsthalle and various bars are frequented in the evening to continue the experience. In 2013, the new exhibition building by Herzog & de Meuron was inaugurated, adding another architectural highlight to the art fair.
