The Roman amphitheatre “Les Arenes d´Arles” is probably the most famous and visited attraction in Arles. With a main axis of 136 metres, the amphitheatre of Arles is even bigger than the arena of Nimes.
The monument was built around 90 A.D., had space for 21,000 spectators and was used for games until 529 A.D.. After the excavations, which began in the 19th century, “Les Arenes d´Arles” is today in a very good condition. Of the former three floors, two have survived and are open to the public all year round. Today, the Arles Amphitheatre is mainly used as a venue for “bullfights”. These shows, called “Courses Camarguaises”, are not about killing the bull, but about tearing off trophies attached to it with the help of a lot of skill and speed.
