In Tuscany you will hardly find a more beautiful Romanesque church than the former monastery of the Benedictine Abbazia di Sant’Antimo. The abbey is nestled in a picturesque landscape just a few kilometres from Montalcino, below Castelnuova dell’Abate. Emperor Charlemagne is said to have founded the abbey in 781 and to have given it richly with lands in the following years. The entrance to the three-nave basilica is guarded by lions, the doors are decorated with numerous Romanesque sculptures and the interior is simple, only the capitals are decorated with mythical creatures, ornaments and scenic representations. The brothers of the Augustinian Order have lived here since the 1980s. A magical moment is a visit to a Mass with Gregorian chants!
